Dreamland
This project is about creating a set of designs for a children’s fantasy series, where the fantasy world is based in the dreams of children after being read a bedtime story. I started by deciding the characters of my child characters and what books they were being read - The Sword in the Stone by TH White and Journey to The Centre of The Earth by Jules Verne. Talking to my coursemates helped me decide to marry the two and merge the worlds of Arthurian knights and dinosaurs to create my plot for the story and inform my visuals.
To develop my work, I created a set for the children’s bedroom – I decided to incorporate part of the plot of Journey to the Centre of the Earth and chose a houseboat as their house. At this point I gathered lots of references of different houseboats and lived-in bedrooms as well as starting a moodboard to describe the vibe of the fantasy world, as parts of the room are reflected in the dream world – or ‘Dreamland’ – itself. I am really happy with the feedback I received on the visuals I created from this and hope to utilise and develop my Photoshop skills further when creating visuals in the future.
I was also really pleased with my time management on this project as I was able to appropriately and effectively produce work to a standard that I was satisfied with. I created a plan for the project and this was successful as I was able to visualise my time. With future projects I would like to recreate this experience with a plan as it worked really well.
.
I think that using SketchUp and 3D design programs also really helped with my satisfaction with ‘Dreamland’ as it helped me visualise things better. I think I have really improved in these areas with this project, and I thought it was successful in not only furthering my skills acquisition this year but also helping me to exercise my creative muscles in a fantasy setting. I really enjoyed doing my storyboards also as I had never done anything like that before. Overall, I am really pleased with my outcomes from this project.
