Vectorworks

This short project was about learning Vectorworks and creating a plan and elevations for either a measured or imagined room using the software.

At the beginning of the project, we’d had one session on how to use Vectorworks for CAD drawing. After that, we had two straight weeks of Vectorworks training before a hand-in at the end.

Overall, I am pleased with my technical drawing. I practised in my free time and used the measurements of my room, adapting them to show my learning as the sessions went on. I think this has been an effective way to work because it has allowed me to manage my time effectively during this short time-frame of two weeks. I was also able to figure out other parts of the program in my own free time.

I think if I were to do the project again, however, I would develop my work further by doing more research into different types of rooms through the architectural ages. I did some research into rooms as I decided to base the trims and mouldings and windows on the historic Owl Suite at Cragside in Northumberland which I have been lucky to visit.

I also looked at books like Joa Studholme’s Recipes for Decorating as the book contains case studies of estate homes like Cragside and the architectural elements are visible. I referenced Owen and Millerson’s Television Production, The Bottom Line document from the NOW and Designer Drafting for the Entertainment World by Woodbridge for reference in regards to line weight and construction.

My Vectorworks skills have improved, but I have to admit that physical drafting is a lot more interesting to me. However, the time saved in regards to producing 3D concepts is great. I also have developed my perspective skills through revising on how to do a mechanical perspective as it has been a while. I think that I would like to continue improving that in the future.
